Have a scene that’s just not working? Grappling with a thorny dramatic problem? Need some support to take your work to the next level or get unstuck?
Script Surgery is a clinic for playwrights that will provide supportive and incisive feedback to help them develop their work, and look at dramatic problems from a fresh perspective.
This session is most appropriate for intermediate or advanced level writers looking to explore their ideas. (A basic knowledge of playwriting, working with characters, and dialogue will be assumed.)
What happens?
Each participant will be given a slot to explore their work. Each writer will be able to use the time in the way that feels most valuable to them.
Some writers may choose to explore an issue through discussion with the group – for example, ‘how can I develop a character I’m struggling with?’, ‘my plot is losing momentum’, or ‘how can I make my opening more exciting’.
Other writers may find it most useful to gain feedback on a particular scene, and participants are welcome to bring in up to five pages of writing to share. (Writing samples are deliberately kept as short as possible, to help the writer zero in on the issue, and to allow adequate time for discussion.)
Supported by ideas from the group and the workshop leader, each writer will leave the session with some new strategies for tackling their work. Additionally, the group discussion will get the creative juices flowing, and provide support and encouragement from other writers.
