The Customs House call out for young writer in residence (17-25)

The Customs House is currently preparing for theur fourth Takeover Festival for 2018. The festival is planned, promoted and delivered by young people from South Tyneside and the wider region, while developing and showcasing the work of their peers.

In 2018 they will build on the success of theirT akeover Theatre Residency programme by creating a once-in-a-lifetime development opportunity for nine young people aged 17 to 25 years old from the region. They are seeking to appoint The Customs House’s first ever Young Writer in Residence, who will benefit from a programme of mentoring delivered by professional writer, Laura Turner (BBC EastEnders: E20; Almeida Theatre; Associate Writer, Petersfield Shakespeare Festival; Chapterhouse Theatre Company).

This mentoring programme will result in a play that will be staged in our Main House during the Festival.

What they are looking for: they are seeking submissions which are responsive to a particular place; somewhere that means something to you whether that’s of local or personal significance.

What you get: Rehearsal during a five-day residency at The Customs House during the festival, with a performance in front of a large public audience as the festival’s closing event on Friday 1 June.

The project will include a preview reading of the play at The Customs House during The WRITE Festival on 24 May at 7.00pm.

Following The Takeover performance, the play with then transfer to Alphabetti Theatre, Newcastle on Saturday 16 June as part of Newcastle’s first Youth Fringe Festival.
