Each week we look through our pile of writing opportunities to pick out one we think is particularly worth your time. It could be an innovative brief, great prize money, a high-profile company, or just plain fun.
This week’s pick: Verity Bargate Award 2017 launched (£7000 prize)
Description: The Verity Bargate award was established in 1982 to honour Soho Theatre’s co-founder and is presented biennially to an artist resident in the UK or Ireland with fewer than three professional productions. The prestigious biennial Award seeks stand out inspiring new writing talent with past winners including Vicky Jones and Matt Charman. Writers may submit one unproduced, unpublished full-length play (not shorter than 70 minutes). The winner receives £7000 in respect of an exclusive option for Soho Theatre to produce the play.
What’s so great about it? If you thought the Bruntwood was the only mega playwriting competition this year, think again – the other heavy-weight opportunity for emerging playwrights, the Verity Bargate Award, has officially been launched. Winners of this highly commended prize get a whopping £7000 in respect of their play being produced by none other than the Soho Theatre.
This year, there’s an added bonus – the award is sponsored by production company Character 7 and one writer will be offered the opportunity to develop their storytelling skills for TV drama. We wouldn’t want an opportunity like this to slip through the net for our readers, so we’ve been sure to give you ample warning: you’ve got until 5 July to get those scripts in – start polishing them up now!
